Hosting AXS on a web site different from the one being tracked

You can install AXS on a web site different from the one being tracked. When doing this, you need to take a few extra steps to ensure that everything works properly:

  1. Go to ax-admin => Customize

  2. Scroll down to the text input labelled:

    "Local web pages will be any web pages which contain this substring in their URL: [_________]"

  3. The string in that text input is used by AXS to determine which URL's are local and which are remote. By default, it will contain the hostname of the server where AXS was first installed. Update the string to use the hostname of the site to be tracked.

    Note: the string is evaluated as a Perl regular expression. If you want to track multiple sites, like nickname.net and fdhost.com and xav.com, you could use "(nickname.net|fdhots.com|xav.com)" (no quotes) as the value.

  4. Next, when adding the Javascript tracking code to your pages, you will be told to use a block of text like so:

    <script type="text/javascript">
    <!--
    	document.write('<img src="/perl/ax.pl?trans.gif&ref=');
    	document.write(document.referrer);
    	document.write('" height="1" width="1" alt="" />');
    // -->
    </script><noscript>
    	<img src="/perl/ax.pl?trans.gif" height="1" width="1" alt="" />
    </noscript>

    The parts highlighted in bold are relative paths, which only work on the same site as the one where AXS is installed. For this tracking code to work on a different site, you'll need to replace the relative paths with absolute paths, such as:

    <script type="text/javascript">
    <!--
    	document.write('<img src="http://www.xav.com/perl/ax.pl?trans.gif&ref=');
    	document.write(document.referrer);
    	document.write('" height="1" width="1" alt="" />');
    // -->
    </script><noscript>
    	<img src="http://www.xav.com/perl/ax.pl?trans.gif" height="1" width="1" alt="" />
    </noscript>

    The absolute path to ax.pl will also need to be used for tracking off-site links.

    Note that SSI tracking tags -- supported in legacy versions -- will not work at all when AXS is hosted on a site separate from the one being tracked.
