Database listings with no URL data

When viewing Database Listings of traffic, some records will be missing the "to" and "from" URL. The listings appear as:

A visitor from host250-99.pool80117.interbusiness.it (80.117.99.250)
arrived without a referring URL,
and visited
at 12:27:24 on Friday, September 12, 2003.
This visitor used Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98).

AXS creates these listings when it is visited by certain browsers which do not have Javascript enabled and which do not transmit the HTTP_REFERER request variable. These are typically browsers which have been "locked down" with strict security settings and special add-on tools so that they reveal as little information as possible to the web sites that they visit.

When AXS was developed in 1997, such browsers didn't exist in large numbers, and so AXS was not designed to handle that case properly. The next major revision to AXS will at least describe what is going on clearly, even if it cannot determine any visitor information.

This behavior is usually consistent, in that the same user will always have the "and visited" field blank, while users from different IP addresses will show normal information in their listings. Inconsistent behavior can happen if different pages on your site have different log types (SSI vs image-redirect vs Javascript vs redirect). Inconsistent behavior can also happen in the visitor adjusts his Javascript and referrer-blocking settings while browsing your site.
