Difference between Freeware, Shareware, and Registered versions
FDSE can be run in one of three modes: Freeware, Trial Shareware, and Registered Shareware.
The Freeware version has these limitations:
- Supports only one Realm
- Supports only a File-Fed or Website Realm, not an Open Realm. As a result, it can not accept visitor-added URL's.
- Usage Statistics are limited -- will show a flat history of all searches, but no grouping by search terms, realm, time, etc.
- Filter Rules are limited -- the four system rules are allowed (Admin Pages, Always Allow Pages, Forbid Sites, Promote Sites) but no additional rules can be created
- The integrated Advertising System is not available
- The publicly-viewable copyright notice must be displayed
The Trial Shareware version has these limitations:
- It can only be used for a reasonable period of time while evaluating the product. After that, you are expected to choose either the Freeware or Registered Shareware versions
- The publicly-viewable copyright notice must be displayed
To select the license mode you would like to use, go to "Admin Page" => "Update License". You can change your license mode at any time.

History: the Freeware license mode was added with FDSE version 2.0.0.0038, released 21 March 2001. The "Update License" screen was added to the admin page in that same release. Previously the only two modes available were Trial Shareware and Registered Shareware.
