How to determine what web server software your site uses

Here are three possible ways to determine what web server software a site is using:

  1. Make an HTTP request and observe the "Server" response header. The Netcraft web site will do this for you.

  2. Or, check the variable $ENV{'SERVER_SOFTWARE'} from a Perl CGI script. The Fluid Dynamics Search Engine will display this info on the Admin Page, under General Settings. The Guardian software will show this info on the Admin Page, under System Testing.

  3. Or, ask somebody who works for your web hosting company.

If you are running the Apache web server, see How to enable custom error messages on the Apache web server.

If you are running Microsoft IIS, see How to enable custom error messages on Microsoft IIS.

If you are running Zeus, see How to enable custom error messages on the Zeus web server.
